WKNR – ESPN 850 AM

WKNR, branded as 850 ESPN Cleveland, is a commercial sports radio station licensed to Cleveland, Ohio, United States. Owned by Good Karma Brands, the station is a flagship station of ESPN Radio, broadcasting a mix of local and national sports programming.

WKNR signed on the air on September 12, 1922, as WTAM. The station was originally owned by the Cleveland News and operated from studios in the newspaper’s building. WTAM was one of the first radio stations in the United States to broadcast in stereo.

In 1979, WTAM was sold to the E. W. Scripps Company. In 1985, the station changed its call sign to WKNR and adopted a sports format. WKNR was one of the first stations in the country to switch to a full-time sports format.
