KTU – 103.5 FM

WKTU (103.5 FM, “KTU”) is a rhythmic contemporary radio station licensed to Lake Success, New York, and serving the New York metropolitan area. Owned by iHeartMedia, Inc., WKTU’s studios are located in the former AT&T Building in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood, and its transmitter is located atop the Empire State Building.

WKTU signed on the air on May 1, 1959, as WINS-FM, the FM counterpart to WINS (AM). In 1972, the station adopted a progressive rock format, and in 1979, it switched to a disco format. In 1983, WKTU flipped to a Top 40 format, and in 1986, it became a rhythmic contemporary station.

WKTU has been one of the most successful Top 40/rhythmic contemporary stations in the United States. In the 1980s, the station was known for its “mix shows,” which featured extended mixes of popular songs. In the 1990s, WKTU was one of the first stations to play hip-hop music.
